Hit Or Miss ……Plainly There Was Some Hype ……Little Substance
By tophac | April 21, 2008
Well we’ve already got some of the fans of the teams that’ve lost their opening games in the NBA playoffs griping as to the outcome. When you start to complain at least have the temerity to back it up with something of substance. I’ve heard the inane comments that allude to the following………’we were leading up until the final few moments but the shots didn’t go down’. Well was that meant to be a surprise ? Who the hell was taking the shot ? Your star player or a scrub from off the bench ?

Message to the Suns’ and Maverick fans if your team is performing like who who’s having sex with a nubile young female . An d all of sudden can’t reach his climax then he’s suffering from something ? It’s commonly known as ED….. erectile dysfunction and it’s where your member otheriwse known as your sexual organ ne’ penis becomes flaccid . Much as in the same way that the two afforementioned teams performed when it called for them to acquit themselves better. But let’s hear it for those Suns and Mavericks’ fans that are willing to stand up and be counted to call it like it they see it and not obfuscate the responsibility elsewhere like they’re some politician.

Avery Johnson , Flip Saunders and Mark D’Antoni have some serious soul searching to do when it comes to the performances of their teams in these opening series of games. To say that they’re not disappointed would be a profound understatement to say the least. And whatever platitudes they’ll use to describe the losses that were inflicted upon their teams. It doesn’t hide the teams’ inefficiencies any the less. But it they’re to extricate themselves from the positions that they find themselves in then it’ll be encumbent upon them to let their respective teams know that their complacency won’t be tolerated under any circumstances whatsoever. That was clearly evident to see in the way that these teams performed.

Joe Calzaghe tries to look for an opening against his opponent Bernard Hopkins during their bout at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Saturday night. picture courtesy of getty images /john c gichigi ……….
At the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Saturday night we may have seen the curtain call on what has been a great career of a fighter that has more than established himself as a fan favorite over the years. Bernard Hopkins lost a split decision verdict to Welshman Joe Calzaghe in fight that was billed as a meeting of the two best light heavyweights in the division. The bout itself lived up to that but once Hopkins was unable to dictate the pace of the fight having dropped his opponent o the canvas in the opening round. You could foresee that Hopkins was in for a very tough night. Calzaghe unhurt and unfazed was allowed back into the fight and gainfully displayed all of the talents that’ve made him such a prodigious fighter within the division over the last decade and more.

Up close and personal the action was still intense as seen here in the sixth round. picture courtesy of getty images/ john c gichigi ……..
He made the older Hopkins look markedly older than his 43 years of age and it would portend to the fact that after this defeat B-Hop now must seriously consider retirement rather than facing an opponent whom it can be said wass more than his equal. At no point in the fight was he able to really get the better of the Welshman other than in that opening round knockdown. And were it not for that I do believe that the result might not have been as close as it had been deemed by the judges.
And as much as this has been a splendid weekend for sport’s fans on the whole . For some it was also a major disappointment for in more ways than one. You may well have expected a lot from your team or that certain sport’s star. But on the day they just weren’t able to live up to all that was expected of them. And bold as it would be for us to predict that for some it was inevitable you half thought that this wasn’t the way it was meant to be.
We always go in thinking that our team or sport’s athlete is the predetermined favorite. And wearing our heart on our sleeves we’ll undoubtedly cheer them on. When really at the back of our minds we know that they’re fully capable of being beaten. On this day however they were beaten by the better team or man as the case may be. That’s part of the charm of being a sport’s fan the unenviable part is however acknowledging defeat when it squarely looks you in the eye and it suggests to you that on this day you are indeed done.

Some great games in the midst of a so-so fight. Calzaghe is not a great puncher, but he’s got a lot of heart, and fight. Hopkins should have known better to get in the ring at his age, but who’s to stop him?
Bring on the Game 2s.

If nothing else the fight told us that when Father Time catches up with your ass ….it’s time to call it quits. And that’s what B-Hop’ ought to do as of now. His status is sealed in the annals of boxing and no one can take that away from him at all.
As to the games that’ll be played we all know that they’re going to be contentious and highly competitive.
So as they say ‘ Let The Games Begin ….And Let The Dice Fall Where They May’ . It’s nothing more than a game of chance anyway.

To many games, and to many days between games to follow. The NBA has really screwed up their playoff scheduling.

The games and series’ll come about fast and could end all to easily. When you consider that the likes of Washington and Houston may as well put out to pasture. In many eyes they’re as good as dead.
Just shows how much the Rockets do miss Yao Ming.
With regard to the Wizards when you’ve got an idiot like Deshawn Stevenson mouthing off like an ingrate you know the team hasn’t got one hell of a chance of defeating the Cavaliers.
Deshawn Stevenson the ingrate who’s making a complete ass of himself and his teammates at the moment.

miracle
The real problem as such isn’t the scheduling but the fact that the game are being played in such a short time span. They could’ve been spread out more but then that’d have elongated the whole playoff scenario and postseason.
It has become a complete mess for the fans as well the public watching.
One thing we can be sure off is that the teams’ll try their hardest at the end of the day.

TOp,
Ah, now I see what you meant.
Spurs-Suns was a hell of a game. I caught what I could, as I was getting stuff ready, papers and stuff, before the niece was dropped off. AS for the Mavericks, I think their window for a championship closed last year. I don’t think they’ll win a championship with Dirk and we could, potentially, see a breakup of the team, a la the Sacramento Kings.
On the whole, from your observations on the fight, I would agree with you that Hopkins looked outclassed, but keep in mind that he IS 43. It’s very hard to keep fighting at that level at that age. Even Holyfield had to hang em up.

The Suns Spurs game was defiantely one for the ages. As to the temerity of Suns’ fans who originally thought that the series was in the bag it’s obvious that they don’t really know much about the game let alone the way that the Spurs play. Passionate they maybe but knowledgeable that’s a completely different question and mindset altogether.
As to Hopkins and the fight against Calzaghe he completely underestimated his opponent despite the first round knockdown. After that it was one way traffic all the way with Calzaghe dictating the fight for the majority of its duration.
